Engineering Recipes: One for the Road

Engineering+Recipes%3A+One+for+the+Road

After three years of writing a cooking column with over fifty dishes shared with our lovely readers, I am afraid that this will be the my last recipe for all of you. To commemorate our last time together, we will be making mixed drinks to celebrate.

For many in college, alcohol is a catalyst to a great night or bad decision. Between you and me, that is just a difference in perspective. I digress a bit, however. Take care to drink in moderation and never operate any machinery while intoxicated. And though “one for the road” is a common phrase for the last drink of the night, please do not drink and then drive, nor perform those activities concurrently.

Like many other NJIT students who have frequented the local bars around the area, many serve different types of beer, hard liquor, and like our recipes for the night, mixed drinks. Though you might spend five to six dollars in Newark, many of you have experienced a twenty dollar charge for a single serving in New York. However, there are a few drinks you can make at home that keep you warm inside and taste wonderful. So tonight, let me share with you my five favorites.

The Four Horsemen

Although traditionally this drink is made with four different shots of whiskey, there are variants that add stronger shots such as Everclear or Wild Turkey to the mix. There is also a version that combines 8 shots of different whiskeys to a single tumbler and usually that means someone is celebrating their 21st birthday.

Tastiness: 4 out of 5

Intoxication: 4 out of 5

Price: $16-25 in most bars

Shots:

• 1 Shot of Jim Bean

• 1 Shot of Jack Daniels

• 1 Shot of Johnnie Walker Black Label

• 1 Shot of Jameson

Although you can take the shots individually, some people combine all four shots together. However as a rule, each shot must be taken one after the other without any chasers in between.

Hot Chocolate and Amaretto

This is one for a cool summer night or snowy winter morning. Amaretto, the liquor of love, carries itself a smooth and rich almond flavor that permeates well into many desserts and works lovely in sweeter drinks.

Tastiness: 5 out of 5

Intoxication: 1 out of 5

Price: $4-8 in most bars

Shots:

• 2 Shots of Amaretto

Ingredients:

• 1 Cup of Hot Chocolate

Simply stir in the amaretto with the hot chocolate and enjoy it warm. What I love about this drink is the warm feeling you get from the amaretto and the sweet mild flavor of the chocolate and almond warming up your body.

Surfer on Acid

This drink has a very tropical feel that works well as a shot or mixed drink consumed straight or on the rocks. What really brings this drink together are the taste and smoothness that a lot of mixed drinks seem to lack when you pour heavy on the rum.

Tastiness: 4 out of 5

Intoxication: 3 out of 5

Price: $6-8 in most bars

Shots:

• 2 Shots of Jägermeister

• 2 Shots of Malibu Rum

Ingredients

• 3 Shots of Pineapple Juice

Simply mix all of them together with ice in a shaker and pour into a chilled cup. This is one of those recipes that really takes the cake when you’re with friends and want to make them something both strong and delicious.

Bloody Mary

This was actually a drink that I wanted to try for the longest time. Surprisingly enough, it was served to me as a hangover cure that works well on Sunday mornings. This is a bit difficult to make if you’re hungover, but prepping it the night beforehand works wonders for many people.

Tastiness: 4 out of 5

Intoxication: 2 out of 5

Price: Not sure

Shots:

• 2 Shots of Vodka

Ingredients:

• 3 Shots of Tomato Juice

• ½ Shot of Lemon Juice

• 1 Dash of Worcestershire Sauce

• Celery Salt

• Ground Pepper

• Tabasco

Simply mix the ingredients together and add as much of the seasonings for taste. This is a very tasty recipe to have in the morning and really eases out a long night of drinking.

The Ziggs: Bombs Away

Editors Note: Don’t try this at home!

Seriously though, this is my drink combination of choice to bring down the house and pentakill my way into League of Legends history. Although traditionally the Bar Fight consists of two of these ingredients, my love of “bomb” drinks have brought upon this deadly combination in which only few people have walked away standing.

Tastiness: 5 out of 5

Intoxication: 5 out of 5

Price: Don’t know actually, but definitely a lot.

Shots:

• Irish Car Bomb: A shot of ½ Whiskey and ½ Irish Cream dropped into Guinness

• Jägerbomb: A shot of Jägermeister dropped into Red Bull

• Boilermaker: A shot of Jameson dropped into Samuel Adams

• Ice Bomb: A shot of Vodka dropped into a mix of Vodka Orange and Sprite

• Tequila Slammer: A shot of Tequila dropped into Ginger Ale

This is the five part drink that usually destroys your kidneys, but tastes wonderful while you do so. Although this is definitely not for the faint hearted, the drinks above are all tasty on their own and will definitely bring you up a level.

And with that, the last recipes for my column are through. Thank you for three years of feedback and response to the recipe columns and I do appreciate the many individuals, both students and faculty, who have tried out my recipes throughout the years. Although this column may be coming to a close, never stop engineering those recipes and remember that you always have time for good eats!

Cheers! And let’s have one last drink for the road!
