Commuter and Parking updates for Fall 2014

Commuter+and+Parking+updates+for+Fall+2014

Over the past few years, NJIT’s student population has been increasing with each incoming freshman class. This year once again marks the biggest freshman class in NJIT history, and with it a huge influx of commuters that need parking spaces. Thankfully, the demand for more parking spaces has been met.

During the summer, numerous changes have been made to lots 7 (behind the Campus Center) and 18 (111 Sussex Avenue). Lot 17, a new space on Boyden Street, has also been opened. Each parking lot is staffed by an NJIT Public Safety officer(s) on Mondays through Thursdays for this semester.

Since Fall of the last academic year, parking has increased by about 100 spaces. Students who wish to park in these designated lots will be required to register their vehicles via ‘njit.edu/parking’ as well as display a current NJIT parking permit. Listed below is information about the lot updates, courtesy of Robert Gjini, Director of Security Systems, Photo ID and Parking Services.

Lot 7 (located behind the Campus Center):

As part of the Campus Master Plan, Lot 7 was redesigned to improve the flow of traffic and to create a more welcoming landscaped entrance.

Lot 17 (located at 104 Boyden Street):

A new parking lot has been designated as lot 17. Lot 17 has 134 parking spaces that will be used to accommodate NJIT permit parking. This lot will be staffed by NJIT public safety officers Monday through Thursday during the Fall 2014 semester. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk to and from this lot along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Lot 18 (located at 111 Sussex Avenue):

The number of parking spaces in lot 18 has been reduced for Fall 2014. The Vision of Hope is building a Marion P. Thomas charter school in the upper portion of the lot. The lower portion of the lot will remain available for NJIT permit parking and will be staffed by NJIT public safety officers Monday thru Thursday during the Fall 2014 semester.

The Department of Public Safety will monitor the use of lots 18 and 17 throughout the semester. If it is determined that both lots are not needed to accommodate parking, one of these lots may be closed.

Lot 9 (located at 315 New Street):

Lot 9 will continue to be used as a “spill over” lot. This lot will only be opened and staffed by the Department of Public Safety when all other lots are approaching their full capacity as a result of special events and or increased parking volume.

If you have multiple classes in one day, you may not wish to carry a backpack full of heavy books. You might also go back and forth to your car to retrieve personal items several times a day! This predicament can get tiresome immediately, but starting this semester you can reserve a locker in the Campus Center basement for FREE! Ask a staff member at the Information Desk, located on the first floor of the Campus Center, what you need to do to reserve a locker. These lockers are reserved for commuter students only.

If you didn’t have enough time to make breakfast, not to worry! Every Tuesday morning starting at 9:30 am, commuters are given the opportunity to have breakfast on the 4th floor of the Campus Center, courtesy of CARS (Commuter Assistance & Resource Services) with prices ranging from $0.25 to $1, or however much you wish to contribute. Typical breakfast options include tater tots, French toast, and sausage links. It is recommended that you take enough food to give you a head start to the day, and leave enough for your other fellow commuters as a courtesy.

Have a safe and happy commute to campus!
