After two years, the surviving family members and friends of slain Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity member Joseph Micalizzi may finally receive justice.

Micalizzi was shot after an attempted robbery that occurred on May 2, 2016. At approximately 3:20 AM, two young men allegedly broke into the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. After an altercation that involved Micalizzi getting shot both in the head and one of his hands, he was taken to University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:02 AM.

Nafee Cotman, 19, of Irvington and Taquan Harris, 21, of Newark have been indicted of charges involving murder, felony murder, robbery, burglary and weapons offenses in Micalizzi’s death. The case is being prepared for trial and as of January 29, 2018, Essex County Judge Ronald Wigler did not set a trial date per the defense’s request for more time. The next hearing for this case is on February 16.

The Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity has since then issued a statement regarding Micalizzi’s murder case: “Tau Kappa Epsilon is grateful to New Jersey’s Essex County Prosecutor’s Office for their continued work to bring the killers of Joseph Micalizzi to justice. We continue to pray for the family and friends of our fraternity brother to find healing and hope the conclusion of this trial provides at least a small level of solace.”
