Delta Phi Epsilon Welcomes Their Largest Ever Fall Recruitment: Phi Beta

Delta Phi Epsilon Welcomes Their Largest Ever Fall Recruitment: Phi Beta

On September 26, 2016, Delta Phi Epsilon international and social sorority happily welcomed their Fall 2016 Phi Beta pledge class. This class breaks the record for Fall recruitment ever with currently 13 new members embarking on their journey to cross into sisterhood.

Before the Delta Phi Epsilon’s Beta Eta chapter formed at NJIT, it was originally known as Sigma Delta Epsilon, a local sorority formed on October 8th, 1990, as a sanctuary for women. On May 3rd, 1992, Sigma Delta Epsilon was colonized by Delta Phi Epsilon.

Delta Phi Epsilon was formed on March 17, 1917 at New York University Law School by Dorothy Cohen Schwartzman, Ida Bienstock Landau, Minna Goldsmith Mahler, Eva Effron Robin, and Sylvia Steierman Cohn. It has over 106 chapters nationwide, including 2 chapters in Canada, thus making it an international sorority.  It is one of the 26 social sororities that form the National Panhellenic Conference.

Delta Phi Epsilon is a non-sectarian sorority meaning they embrace women of all races and religion. They are an organization that strongly upholds their motto “Esse Quam Videri” – “To be rather than seem to be” as they foster members with special talents, opinions, and life perspectives. Their mission is to “provide a sisterhood experience rich in tradition, innovation and opportunities for growth.”

Delta Phi Epsilon has three international philanthropies: the Delta Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation; the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; and the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. The Beta Eta Chapter at NJIT focuses on the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation during the fall semester and the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders during the spring semester. Throughout the year, they also participate in the Delta Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation and Tates Totes.  In addition, Delta Phi Epsilon also participates in events such as the New York City Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, which happened this past year on October 16, and volunteers with Community Food Banks.

There are currently 36 active members in the Beta Eta Chapter.

Phi Beta is “excited to get acquainted with the sorority and [we] looks forward to serving our community, as well as participating in our philanthropies,” says Paul Clemente.
