Movie Reviews: The Host and Evil Dead

The Host

Choose your destiny.

By Katelyn Brennen

Earth has been inhabited by an intelligent alien species known as “Souls.” Although an incredibly peaceful race, Souls can only survive by being inserted into a host body and taking control of their minds. In a last ditch effort to discover the secret whereabouts of the last remaining human resistances, a Soul known as Wanderer has been inserted into the human Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), who was captured while attempting to distract the Souls from locating her family. After insertion, Wanderer comes to realize an unsettling fact – Melanie has not faded away in consciousness, and in fact is putting up walls in her mind to prevent her family from being found. As time passes Wanderer begins to feel sympathetic toward the humans Melanie loves so dearly- her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her partner, Jared Howe (Max Irons). Wanderer becomes torn between loyalty to her own race and her blossoming love for the humans in her memories. As Wanderer’s and Melanie’s trust builds, they embark on a journey to save the last of the human race from being eradicated from the world.

Evil Dead

They got up on the wrong side of the grave.

A remake of the 1981 original directed by Sam Raimi brings back a lot of the elements of old-time horror movies. The remake, like the original, relies on natural sounds like creaking floorboards or heavy breathing to send chills through the audience. Some have described the movie as “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.”

Five friends head to a remote cabin to help Mia (Jane Levy) fight through her addiction with drugs. While Mia begins to battle withdrawal, a smell begins to waft up through the floorboards of the cabin. Soon, they find a hatch where they discover the Book of the Dead that leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival. Who will make it out alive?
