Spoken Word: Living For God

Spoken Word

Living For God

John Brian Canela

What if this. What if that. I just need to stop thinking

My mind is on a boat with heavy thoughts and it’s sinking

Each and every day this life gets more confusing

I’m trying to fight this battle and it looks like I’ll be losing

People tell me it’s okay, hey. Don’t worry, it’s alright

I’m standing on this building, looking down – afraid of heights

Why am I going through this? I don’t even understand

This isn’t what you wanted. Lord, this can’t be what you’ve planned

I’m hearing all these voices telling me where not to go

Holy Spirit showing me the things I need to know

But I run.

Trying to catch my breath as I blow

Invited to crazy gatherings with all of these so called “friends”

It’s funny how these people all like to play pretend

Now is when I notice, as my wounds are starting to mend

That your fake friends leave, when the real smiles end

I drink for this escape. For a moment I forget my problems

I forget that there’s this God who is there to help me solve them

In the morning I wake up with this huge feeling of guilt

Once I was a church kid, but now my world has tilt

“My character has changed but there’s no way to go back

My mind is corrupt, I have done too much, I need to face the facts

I’ll talk to God when I get fixed, He can’t see me like this

Too many things to do. God’s on the bottom of my list”

There are way too many people that go through this exact story

Thinking they should fix themselves, before giving God the glory

We belong to a savior who lovingly calls us his own

Jesus fully paid the price … He never took out any loans

Stop thinking you need to pay him back by being perfect

He died for you on the cross because he knew that you were worth it

We aren’t saved by all the righteous things that we’ve done

Our sins have been forgiven and this battle’s already won

We go through struggles in life so that we can learn to persevere

Our life is a road, and we’re in the car, so let our God just steer

What you’ve been confused about will all be made clear

His plan is to prosper you, to give you hope … not fear

Let our bodies be like buildings and God’s word be our foundation

It all starts with one – to change the world, to change this nation

Be in prayer throughout the day, as you keep God in connection

And listen to his Spirit as it guides you in the right direction
