What to stream online this week: Anti-Romance Part 2

A few weeks ago in the Valentine’s Day issue of the Vector, I wrote a column entry for semi-romantic films to watch over the weekend. Here are a continuation of great movies with couples in them.

The One I Love (Movie)

In an extremely cursory plot summary, a couple is going through some troubles with their relationship. Their therapist recommends going on a vacation to a small secluded and tranquil house for a weekend. Then weird things begin to happen, that makes both characters question what they really desire from their relationship.

The One I Love is a great commentary on how we idealize our romantic partners, and what it takes to keep a relationship going. The execution of the movie is excellent, and does a great job of spinning an amazing plot despite being locked into one location with only two actors for the duration.

The One I Love is available on Netflix, YoutubeVOD, and Amazon Instant Video

Nymphomaniac (Movie)

N-17. While it is not recommended that this movie is viewed in a public place, please do not get the wrong impression of this movie. This well-known Lars Von Trier directed project was originally 5 and a half hours long, and a major portion of that runtime is unsimulated sex. 50 Shades of Grey can’t even hold a candle to a Lars Von Trier movie.

Underneath the copious, sometimes gratuitous sex scenes is a great piece of cinematography. Nymphomaniac is ultimately about love, and how people try to get to that point emotionally, as well as guilt and how people deal with their pasts. It’s easy to overlook “Nymphomaniac” because of the way it presents itself, but underneath the sexual display and cinematic features, the movie is a great commentary on human emotion and love.

Nymphomaniac is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime

Heathers (Movie)

Heathers is a cult classic of the 80s. The movie depicts the destructive relationship between high schooler Veronica and her rebellious, borderline criminal, classmate turned boyfriend J.D. As the movie progresses, it becomes increasingly dark, with the couple deciding to eliminate their school’s social hierarchy. It’s difficult to discuss the movie without spoiling the plot, but overall, this movie has been consistently ranked as one of the best high school films of all time.

Heathers is available on Netflix, Hulu Plus, and YoutubeVOD, and Amazon VOD
