ASIA
1. Seoul, South Korea: South Korea was hit by Typhoon Chaba on Wednesday 10/05/2016, leading to the death of at least 6 people and flooding more than 500 homes, 150 shops and 1046 vehicles. Till now four people have been reported missing. The typhoon is now headed towards Japan.
2. Beijing, China: This week saw over a 1000 Rubik’s fanatics gathered at Beijing Jingsong Vocational School Chanying Campus to test and showcase their skills at The Asian Championship in Beijing being held between 1st-3rd October. The youngest contender was four-and-a-half years and parents said that cubing helped in keeping the children busy and aided in brain development.
The record of the solving the Rubik’s Cube (3X3) fastest is still held at 5.62 seconds.
3. Baramulla, India: An Indian Army camp was attacked by militants Late-Sunday night, which led to the death of one soldier and one BSF officer. The army was camped in India-administered Kashmir; this attack is most likely retaliation for the surgical strike conducted by the Indian army against Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir.
EUROPE
1. Moscow, Russia: An armed man threatened to torch the Moscow Choral Synagogue on Saturday which is the Jewish Sabbath and takes place a day before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
The man attacked the security guard who impeded him from entering the building. The security guard has been hospitalized and the man has been detained. His identity has not been revealed yet and the motive is also unknown.
2. Reykjavik, Iceland: The city of Reykjavik was ordered an hour of Lights Out on Wednesday night for visitors and residents to witness the beautiful phenomenon of the Dancing Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) better. The city council ordered the street lights to be turned off in most neighborhoods to reduce the light pollution. The motorists were also urged to stay safe while driving.
3. Portuga
l: Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is set to become the next United Nations secretary-general, after the 15 security council members agreed to put his name forward to a formal vote. Guterres had been the head of UN’s refugee agency for 10 years till 2015 and was the Security Council’s runaway favorite in the 6th straw polls on Wednesday.
AFRICA
1. Bishoftu, Ethiopia: The police at the Oromo Irreechaa Festival in Bishoftu had to fire warning shots in the air as “Troublemakers” physically attacked elders who were making their way to the stage to say their blessings for the new year. The shots fired led to a stampede which killed over 52 people.The festival was attended by over 2 million people
2. Johannesburg, South Africa: the students of Wits University, Johannesburg protested against the rise in fees on Tuesday. Some protesters even threw stones at police and private security guards, thus forcing the police to use tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades on the protesting students. Student leader Mcebo Dlamini has been arrested.
