At the end of the 2013 Spring semester, several representatives from different Division of Academic Support and Student Affairs departments formed a wellness committee.

Their goal was to “bring a more centralized focus to wellness programming that will take a proactive approach to student wellness.” The committee wanted to emphasize the importance of physical, emotional, social, intellectual and nutritional wellness by teaching students the importance of personal responsibility for their health.

From September 9 through September 13, the committee presented its “Wellness Week” program. Activities included daily tabling with brochures from Health Services and the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (C-CAPS); launch of the “Highlander Health” pledge initiative; free apples, donated by NJIT Athletics, as giveaways; and a “Yoga on the Green” event. Students from Alpha Sigma Phi, the Pre-Health Society, and the Biology Society aided with tabling throughout the week.

The committee plans to host more events throughout the year encompassing a smoke-free campus initiative and events to promote stress reduction and awareness of exercise, nutrition, and obesity.
