The Food Bros:
This week the food bros hit Krug’s Tavern, which is a nice relaxed drive off Ferry St. in the Ironbound district. Family owned and operated since 1932, Krug’s Tavern has been a local hot spot ever since it opened its doors.
Krug’s Tavern has a fully stocked bar that also contains its open kitchen. Past the bar in the back is a small restaurant style dining room that is open to small events like birthdays or office parties. They have plenty of flat screen televisions, perfect for game day or just watching sports center with friends.
Krug’s kitchen is open to the entire restaurant; patrons see their meals being prepared by the staff in the back. It assures customers that their meal is being prepared properly and only with the freshest of ingredients. One can also see the famous “oversized” Krug burgers being prepared at all times, which are impressive to behold.
Food Bro One:
I was skeptical of Krug’s Tavern at first. From the outside, Krug’s is not much to look at. This hole in the wall, however, turned out to be one of my all-time favorite spots in Newark.
The atmosphere inside is very bare bones but also strangely inviting. We sat ourselves at a high table adjacent to the bar and were promptly serviced with a drink order. I ordered the cheesesteak and it hastily came out. I am always skeptical of ordering a cheesesteak; whenever I order them, they overload the sandwich with onions and peppers, don’t add enough steak, and other times they use cheese-wiz. However, I was feeling good about Krug’s and my instincts proved fruitful. The steak was juicy and the peppers and onions were balanced with the perfect amount of steak.
The relaxed and laid back feel of Krug’s Tavern really struck me and made a deep impression. All in all, Krug’s Tavern is now my new favorite hang out to just relax and watch some sports.
Food Bro Two:
Walking up to Krug’s Tavern gave me a very interesting feeling. Their sign is half lit and old, and their entrance is comprised of a blank metal door that leads into the bar area. However, the atmosphere inside the bar was fantastic.
You can seat yourself at a high table, at the bar, or in the restaurant seating area towards the back of the building. They have classic bar-style foods with sandwiches of all kinds, burgers and cheesesteaks with wings and fries as appetizers. We ordered the wings to split and they were deftly made with just enough spice to give it a kick, though not enough to light your mouth on fire!
While sitting there enjoying our wings, we saw these thick juicy burgers being cooked on the grill in the kitchen. When it came to us I had this inch thick bacon cheeseburger sitting in front of me, rare and dripping with juice. The first bite was just delectable, and I went through the burger thinking that each bite was better than the last.
I highly recommend the food of Krug’s tavern. Purely delicious. The atmosphere, food, and the music is great way to have a meal.
