Tech Talks: Valentines Day Gifting

By Steve Susanibar

Showing affection with cute dancing trees

If you’re still fretting about Valentines Day gifts for your man crush or lady friend, we’re here to help. There are a lot of great gift choices for techies, we thought we’d give you a list of ideas that we think could make your special someone’s day.

Adorable Dancing Groot

While it may not be the most conventional plant to give to your significant other, those of you who saw Marvel’s summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy will agree that that baby Groot dancing was perfect. Add in an oblivious Drax, or roommate, and you have a cuteness overload.

Sold by Funko Pop! This adorable dancing sensation will liven up your dorm with his moves.

While the bobble head is priced at an affordable 8 dollars, this little guy requires that you provide the music yourself while he does his thing. Don’t fret if you were hoping for a mechatronic-dancing Groot, as there are plenty of other Groot toys, such as the one sold by Cool Kids Electronics for 15 dollars.

External Battery Pack

If you know someone like us who prefers to read documents on phones because it’s cheap and walks out in the cold to the library are too tiresome, then you might want to get them something to help their battery life. For this Valentine’s Day you can invest in a high quality phone case charger like the Mophie battery charger. Sure, it’s not the most romantic thing in the world, but the recipient will thank you every time his or her phone starts to die, and then comes roaring back to life.

With its sleek, thin design and potential to deliver more than 100% extra battery, the Mophie battery charger is a good buy. I’ve had mine for over a year and it has served me well through all the times that I’ve dropped it. The only warning is that it doesn’t protect well if the phone falls flat on its face from a high point. My recommendation is that you purchase it off eBay, as you’ll find much better deals in comparison to the ones on the website.

Baymax-imum Cuteness Plush Doll

This next gift doesn’t quite fit into the techie category, but surely with Disney’s latest hit Big Hero 6, we had to make room for it somewhere on this list.

Introducing the Baymax plush toy, which comes with its own sound effects that you hear when you squeeze him tightly. At just 10 inches this gift is perfect for that fan of the movie who has their bed filled with plush toys. Why not help them reconcile these two interests with one gift that will always remind them of their favorite Baymax quotes whenever they give it a hug?

While it doesn’t heat up like the original Baymax, it is still incredibly soft and still a very comfortable toy to cuddle up with.

Geek’s Guide to Dating

Finally, is your techie into Star Wars, action figures, Elder Scrolls, Halo, Star Trek or maybe wishes they went to Hogwarts? This book may be a perfect gag gift (or secret bible) for them.

The book is purchasable off Amazon for only 12 dollars, and according to the book’s description, it is intended for gamers or geeks of all ages who wish to find the ultimate answers for life, love and everything romantic. This hilarious book is filed with cheat codes, walkthroughs, and power-ups for navigating the perils and pitfalls of your love life with ease. It includes quirky and capricious illustrations and solves the world’s most coveted mystery: love.

We hope with these gift ideas you are well on your way to getting your Valentine a memorable yet thoughtful gift, and please let us know if you do end up buying one of these items to give. If you have any gift suggestions please feel free to let us know either on Facebook or by contacting one of our staff members!
