The goals of Movember are to raise awareness about men’s health issues, raise money for prostate and testicular cancer research, and grow an awesome mustache. For the month of November, the brothers of Kappa Xi Kappa have been hard at work. Throughout the month, they setup a table in the Campus Center from Monday to Thursday, showing a collage and videos all about mustaches. There was also a banner hanging up in the Campus Center alerting all who walked by that Movember was upon them. At the table there was construction paper to make your very own mustache, the crazier the better. The brothers also handed out information about men’s health, from which readers learned that 1 in 4 men die from cancer and 1 in 6 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
All the work throughout the month culminated in the Gala Dinner that Kappa Xi Kappa held. It was a semiformal event with everyone looking quite classy for the dinner. There were several other Greek organizations showing their support for Men’s health. The food was from Brasilia, with dessert from Top’s Diner. There were also raffles and prizes given out during the dinner. More than just fun, the dinner was educational. There was information about Men’s health and a healthier lifestyle pledge to accomplish by next Movember.
At the time of this writing, the brothers have raised over $1,800 for Movember. To put this into perspective, the total amount of money raised for philanthropy by all fraternities and sororities in Spring 2013 was $8152. That’s over 20% of the total. Looking back a year ago, in Fall 2012 the total amount raised by all fraternities and sororities was $2581. The money raised for Movember this year is over 70% of the total amount raised by all Greek life for philanthropy from a year ago. The coordinator for all that was accomplished this Movember was Kenneth Ponce de Leon, the vice president of Kappa Xi Kappa. His efforts truly made this a momentous Movember.
