The 3rd Public Safety Meet & Greet was held in the Campus Center Atrium on Tuesday to counter the gloomy weather that covered campus. The event was sponsored by Residence Hall Association, Student Senate, Campus Center, and Public Safety and featured games, food, friendly officers, a table for the HERO campaign, and voting for the challenge coin.
The challenge coin is an emblem designed by students during the annual event and awarded to students who are dedicated to continually helping public safety on service projects all throughout campus. Similarly, lighting surveys are a good way to get involved with public safety. Every year, police officers team up with students and figure out how to improve the campus environment in the better interest of students. Last year, students and public safety officers made over 90 lighting installments throughout campus.
The Chief of Public Safety at NJIT, Joe Marswillo, encourages students to, “put all hesitations behind and approach any public safety officer or police officer for guidance, help, or ideas at any time.” Anyone with any suggestions or an interest in helping out public safety is welcome to approach any officers or go to the headquarters on the first level of the parking deck.
The meet and greet event itself was meant to help students to get to know the people behind the uniform. Roy Baker, a student who attended the event, exclaimed, “I enjoyed getting to know the officers in a casual setting!” Students played Janga with officers, got free snow cones, and were able to freely and informally converse with the numerous officers at the event.
Ariana Tay, an NJIT student, said, “It was really nice to get to know the people I walk by on campus every day.”
