What exactly is fasting? In Islam, fasting is the act of abstaining from food, drink, and sex from daybreak to sunset, particularly during the time of Ramadan. However, fasting can also be used to mean the act of abstaining from anything such as bad language or actions, because a fast of mere food does not hold much value if it is accompanied by quarrels.
When is Ramadan and why is it important?Ramadan is during the ninth month of the lunar calendar and is thought to be the month during which the first revelation of the Quran took place.
So why is fasting important in Islam? The act of fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. A common misconception is that Muslims fast as a form of punishment. Rather, people of the Islamic faith fast to practice self-discipline, obedience, and control. It is thought that being especially conscientious of ones actions during this time, which fasting automatically encourages, is important to straying from sinful deeds and being a good Muslim.
What if fasting is not the best option for someone’s health?Though fasting is highly encouraged, those who are travelling, sick, or generally unable to fast are exempt, but are encouraged to make up the days later when they are in a better condition.
