With the first month of 2018 already over, now is a good time to take a look at some of the movies that people are looking forward to this year. From superhero flicks, such as Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, to animated features, such as Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3, here are some movies to look forward to this year.
Black Panther (16 Feb)
Black Panther is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s eighteenth installment, and the first to feature a primarily black cast. Directed and written by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o, this superhero flick is set in the fictional country of Wakanda, where King T’Challa (played by Boseman) returns home to his kingdom, only to find that Killmonger (played by Jordan) plans to overthrow the kingdom. It is up to T’Challa, as the titular Black Panther, to prevent this siege of power, with the help of CIA agent Everett K. Ross (played by Martin Freeman) and the Dora Milaje.
At the time that this article was written, Black Panther is already doing well commercially. The movie is expected to make as much as $150 million by Presidents’ Day weekend. Fans have been gushing over this movie on social media, so look forward to seeing it later this month.
A Wrinkle in Time (9 Mar)
Based on the novel by Madeleine L’Engle, this sci-fi movie stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling as three immortal beings who travel with Meg Murray (played by Storm Reid) to help find her missing father. A Wrinkle in Time looks to be a promising movie.
Avengers: Infinity War (4 May)
Many comic book fans have waited eagerly for this movie; now that its release is imminent, the hype has risen dramatically. In it, the now torn-apart Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) from collecting all six Infinity Stones and bringing destruction to the universe.
Fans of Marvel have been waiting for this movie ever since the release of the first Avengers movie. It is one of the biggest events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing together characters that have yet to interact with each other until now, and introducing a villain that many fans have been anticipating. Although many of the studio’s villains have been lackluster, many people are hoping that Thanos won’t disappoint on the big screen.
Deadpool 2 (18 May)
After the success of the first Deadpool in 2016, Ryan Reynolds returns as the Merc with a Mouth with all new characters such as Cable (played by Josh Brolin). Not much else is known about what will take place during the movie, but if the success of the first movie is any indication, the sequel is definitely something to look forward to.
Incredibles 2 (15 Jun)
After about 14 years, the Incredibles are returning to the big screen. This time, Bob Parr stays at home with the kids while Elastigirl is out fighting crime and discovers Jack Jack’s new powers. Older fans of the original will definitely be looking forward to the sequel after so long.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (22 Jun)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sees the island in danger from an erupting volcano as Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) try to save the remaining dinosaurs from their doom.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (6 Jul)
This installment into the MCU introduces Hope Van Dyne as the Wasp as well as an interesting new concept. The trailer shows several objects and characters shrinking and growing in size, something that seems like an interesting concept for this film. We will just have to wait and see just how it all plays out.
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (21 Nov)
The first Wreck-It Ralph was an enjoyable film that took place in several video games. The sequel now seems to be breaking away from that as the titular character travels to the World Wide Web. It definitely sounds like an interesting concept, and it definitely would be interesting to see appearances from the Disney Princess lineup.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (14 Dec)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finally introduces Miles Morales as the Afro-Latino web-slinger who takes Peter Parker’s place after his death. This is something to definitely look forward to seeing when the time comes.
Here’s to hoping that these movies, along with others coming out this year, will turn out good.
