There are few things I love more than hearing the word “crisp” from the weatherman’s mouth. Autumn is the reason I chose to stay in Jersey for college; who doesn’t love sweater weather, bonfires and pumpkin flavored everything? However, just because we are storing away our bathing suits and bikes does not mean fall is a time to give up on your health.
Battle your allergies
Ragweed, dry leaves, and mercurial temperatures are sure to give anyone the sniffles. However, seasonal allergies are best managed if you know what you are allergic to. Try to get tested so your doctor can help you tackle your exact symptoms. Additionally, look into over-the-counter allergy medications. These are often cheaper and are just as affective expensive name brands.
Get your flu shot
Flu viruses are constantly changing, and different flu viruses circulate and cause illness each season. The annual flu vaccine is updated each year to protect against the flu viruses that research indicates will be most common. This is why everyone needs a flu vaccine every year. Take a walk over to Student Health Services (located in the athletic center) to get your flu shot today.
Actively alter your eating habits
Traditional Chinese medicine states that one should eat fruits that reflect the colors of the season. This is still prominent in modern science. Apples are a great source of calcium and vitamin C, and their skin contains a compound called quercetin whish is associated with fighting with multiple diseases. Pumpkins are also great sources of vitamin A and potassium. Chestnuts contain vitamin B6, which plays a role in boosting the immune system and prevents the skin dryness associated with fall weather. Other year-round foods that boost your health are root vegetables (like turnips or carrots), pears, garlic, and onions.
Make sure to incorporate these foods into health recopies and avoid binging on comfort foods. Cold weather makes us want to eat more, but the more you consume, the more you need to move, which brings us to our next topic.
Maintain your workout routine
For anyone trying to stay fit or keep off weight, cold seasons are the hardest. As cold weather closes in we want to snuggle with hot cocoa and not work out. To battle this feeling, sleep and wake earlier, so you are asleep for the coldest parts of the night. Additionally, exercise earlier in the day to help get your heart rate up early so you can relax and snuggle under blankets the rest of the day (or go to class). Additionally, as your coursework builds up during this time of year, utilize chores as exercise. Cleaning and packing away your summer clothes can be a work out! Another fun workout is apple picking. NJIT’s Young Alumni Club offers a discounted apple picking event every year for NJIT students.
Wash your hands
This applies to all times of the year, but especially during fall. Make sure you use warm water and wash your hands as often as possible, not just when you go to the restroom.
With a strong influenza season predicted, you can’t afford to be sick during your first set of exams. Make sure to take advantage of the fun fall activities on campus, and take the necessary steps to stay healthy during this beautiful season.
