The Highlander Student Emergency Fund, entirely dependent on donations from the university community, provides limited emergency financial assistance to students currently enrolled at NJIT who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses due to temporary hardship related to an emergency situation.  The first student assisted through this fund lost his possessions to a sudden fire. NJIT provided him free temporary housing and a laptop to get him back on his feet, and the funds will help to replace his lost belongings.

The funding is generated by donations from faculty, administration, and staff.  Students are also contributing to the fund.  The Hockey Club Team is supporting the fund through “Chuck a Puck.”  It ran at four home games and they will host it again at their games in November, January and February.  To date the Hockey Team has contributed $252.50 to the fund!

To be eligible a student must be a currently enrolled full-time (undergraduate or graduate) at NJIT and have a temporary financial hardship. A student is only eligible one time during their academic year to apply for emergency assistance. When a student applies, sufficient documentation is required.  Students must also be in good standing with the University.  Typical expenses that may be covered include those that arise from unexpected incidents that create financial hardship. It includes, but is not limited to, travel or medical emergency, fire damage, temporary housing or accidents. Students will need to provide supporting documentation.  This information is located on the Financial Aid website along with the on-line web application.
