The High Line
This stretch of abandoned rail tracks was converted into a public park by a nonprofit foundation called Friends of the High Line. The first section of the Line opened in June 2009, with the second following in June 2011. A third stretch is currently under renovation. Stroll through well-kept greenery and stop at designated viewing points to take in the scenic New York City skyline. If you take the PATH train to 33rd Street, a short walk takes you to the park entrance on 30th. The other end of the trail stops a few blocks from the Christopher Street PATH station.
Brooklyn Bridge
Walk, run, jog or otherwise move your way across the iconic 1.1 mile long bridge that connects bustling Manhattan to the suburbs of Brooklyn. It’s free, you get to exercise, and at the end of it, you can duck under the bridge and treat yourself to a slice of pizza at Grimaldi’s, which has picked up numerous Best Pizza Zagat ratings. Then turn around and sprint back the way you came to burn off your tasty treat.
New York Public Library: Main Branch
Center stage to countless films over the years is the mid-Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, this is a must-see for architecture geeks and book lovers alike. It’s a great place for some quiet reading or studying – there’s free WiFi! If you need to get your head out of the books, Bryant Park is at your doorstep, with its eclectic mix of landscaping and city folk.
Alternative Spring Break
Feel like dedicating your time to a good cause? Help New Jersey communities recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Over 600 people registered last year to take part in the cause, including a number of NJIT students. They spent their week building structures, cleaning up debris, and warming the hearts of those in need. Join the kick-off session on Friday, March 14th at 11:30am in the Ballroom.
Catch a Show
You don’t have to empty your wallet to catch a Broadway show or concerts – all you need is a little patience and time, which you will have plenty of during spring break. The Times Square Ticket Booth lines can run long, but it’s well worth the wait to snag seats at bargain prices; it does require a little luck, however, as you can only purchase tickets for same-day showings. Check out individual theatres for their policies on rush tickets. NJPAC also offers student rush tickets to select shows. Pre-show dining recommendation: Qi Bangkok Eatery on 8th Ave.
