The Atrium had all the signs that an event was going on; there were pretty girls dressed up behind tables and plenty of people crowding the entrance. The sorority Alpha Sigma Tau (AST) was hosting its annual Anchorman event.
The Anchorman is pretty much a male beauty pageant to find the man that most embodies the ideals of AST. The money raised through this event goes towards Babyland, a shelter for battered women and foster children as well as a relief program for abused families. They were also having a bake sale and selling cupcakes and brownies to help raise money. AST will also be holding a wing eating contest on April 8th in the Pub, also to raise money for Babyland.
The MCs for Anchorman were Dorothy and Claudia, two sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau. There were 4 judges: two alumni of AST, and Robert “Bob” Moran and Humberto “Humby” Baquerizo, who both work at the Campus Center. They judged each contestant in four categories: spirit wear, swim wear, talent, and formal wear. For spirit wear, the contestants dressed up in the colours of AST, green and gold. The swim wear consisted of bathing suits, board shorts, and flippers on the stage. The talent section was diverse. There was guitar playing and singing, drums, Irish step dancing, and even soccer ball tricks. The contestants looked dashing in their suits and lady by their side as they gallantly entered the stage. They answered questions on how they would be the best candidate for AST’s Anchorman and uphold the ideals of the sorority. In the end, the judges voted for Spencer from Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) to be awarded the golden crown and sash as this year’s Anchorman.
