‘Twas the night before Halloween when all throughout the Pub
Thrill seekers were stirring; what could have possibly been the hubbub?
Costumes were donned, crafted with care
With hopes to be a crowd favorite, only second to the sexy hare.”
The Student Activities Council (SAC), Latin American Student Organization (LASO), and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), held the largely successful Highlander Halloween event last Thursday night. Themed after the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, the event worked to celebrate both Americanized Halloween traditions and Hispanic culture.
The night started off with the sounds of music being blared out of the pub. The talented individuals of WJTB, the school’s radio club, as well as DJ Oscar Llerena worked hand-in-hand in mixing western top 40’s with Latin numbers to create a Latin fusion atmosphere that encouraged salsa dancing and other social dancing that lasted until past the end of the event.
In keeping with the Dia de los Muertos theme, calaveras (skulls) face painting was offered by the LASO, which proved to be a huge hit with even those who were not familiar with the iconic symbol’s practices or significance. Students lined up to have the elaborate designs of flowers and other skeletal characteristics painted onto them, adding to the fun and festive spirit in the pub.
Mini-games were hosted by the SAC and SHPE, which encouraged friendly competition with the attendees. Cash prizes were given to the winners of the widely entertaining pumpkin pie eating contest, toilet paper mummy wrapping contest, a pumpkin painting contest, and finally, a costume contest of three categories; most intricate, most sexy, and most funny. Laughter and cheer were endless as the crowd watched their friends dance suggestively on stage. Definite crowd favorites included a self-made cardboard iron man suit by the talented Victor Del Corro, a third year Architecture student, and the cleverly executed GDS employee uniform that was worn proudly by second year Biology student, Liem Ho.
Students could finish off their nights by having their fortunes read in tarot cards by a psychic or by having a memorabilia photo taken and printed out on site by popular party vendors.
Hallow’s eve at the pub was a night full of culturally intermixing fun, dancing, light competition, laughter, and friends. Students should definitely look forward to stopping by at more collaborative celebrations like this one in the future.
