Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization whose main goals are to help its participants and members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills, in order to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
On NJIT’s campus, the Toastmasters Club upholds the same goals of the organization. They follow the standard international Toastmasters format of prepared speeches, meeting roles, evaluations, table topics, etc. The purpose of the club here is to develop students into leaders in business, science, technology, or politics.
Toastmasters hosts workshops and events that focus on improving everyone’s public speaking skills and provides the opportunity that everyone gets the chance to develop all different kinds of communication skills and self-confidence.
The club also actively collaborates with NJIT’s Career Development Service department (CDS). Last semester, they co-hosted an event called “Coffee with CDS,” where students got introduced to some useful communication techniques, whether for an interview or to guarantee success in any career. Some other events that took place last semester were Bloomberg Terminal Training, End of Semester Speech Contest, and Charter Ceremony.
The Bloomberg Terminal Training turned out to be a successful event, with the rate of students starting their Bloomberg Certification increasing by 20 percent in only one month. The End of Semester Speech Contest was sort of summing up all the semester’s hard work and recognizing the person who was most able to develop their public speaking skills. This was really a great way to push students into working harder on their skills.
In conjunction with their major events, Toastmasters continue to meet weekly and have people talk about different topics and learn new communication skills.
Toastmasters is the club to join, as it will help you build your own personal characteristics and still be sociable as you will certainly meet new people. Coming up soon this semester is “Public Speaking Workshop with CDS,” which will discuss public speaking tactics and help students compose themselves with the help of CDS.
As David Liptsyn, Founder President of the NJIT Toastmasters says:
“Toastmasters is a life-changer: the leadership, speaking, and communication skills learned have opened countless doors for our members. I am dedicated to helping our students develop these skills and take their personal and professional lives to the next level.”
