There are things that every person wishes they knew before they started college. Here are a couple of things that you might find helpful throughout your academic career at NJIT.
Registration at NJIT is a process that, if mishandled, will cause you a lot of suffering the next semester. To avoid that, you’ll want to start the task early. There is a hold placed on your account for the following reasons: you have unpaid balances with NJIT or you have a cumulative GPA lower than 3.0. To remove the hold, you need an outstanding balance of 0, and to speak with your advisor.
NJIT has a course repetition policy. You can take any undergraduate level course up to four times, and the lowest grade will be replaced. If you take a class a third time, it will be averaged. This extends to the fourth time you retake it. It is useful for boosting your GPA.
Make it a point to ask your professor if they’re actually going to use the text in class. If they don’t use it? Don’t buy the book.
There are many students selling their books on various NJIT Facebook pages. Check them out; it may save you money.
NJIT has a sauna in the Fleischer athletic center. Staying in a sauna for half an hour relaxes you like nothing else. Careful about staying in longer though, it can lead to dehydration and death.
Do well in your beginning semesters. It is harder to raise a low GPA as your credits increase.
You can reserve study rooms for your group in the library for free. All you need are at least two NJIT IDs to leave at the desk. It is an excellent place to prepare for your exams with a group.
The best places to study are the places that no one knows exists. The basement of the library is always quiet. The upper levels of the school of management located in the same building of the library is also an ideal place to study. Alternatively, the second floor of the Campus Center has a few quiet spots around the central rooms. Lastly, you could always study in an empty classroom in any of the academic buildings; just be prepared to leave if class starts in that room.
The cheapest place to get food is at the commuter cafeteria’s Taco Bell. The nicest place to eat is the Highlander Pub.
F’real is a slippery slope. Don’t do it.
Every student is entitled to free software provided by NJIT. There is software for Windows, Macs, and Linux. Available licensed products include Windows 8, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, and a slew of other premium software.
If you feel like you, or someone close to you, needs therapy for any reason, C-Caps can provide it. Location in Campbell Hall, they offer their services to any student that needs help. Therapy sessions are provided free of charge to all students. Of course, any information disclosed to these professionals will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and respected.
Join at least one club. It will lead to making friends.
College is definitely not like in the movies. In films like “College”, the characters’ lives revolve around parties and women. The college experience at NJIT is different; people actually go to class in real life. There is also a very low ratio of females to males. It’s best for you to wake up from the Hollywood fantasy of higher education and focus on getting your degree.
For the religious students that reside on campus: there is mass every Sunday in Campus Center room B35, at 8pm. It saves you a walk to the church by Rutgers.
Read the newspaper! The Vector strives to provide information useful to students every time it goes to print. It is one of the best ways to keep yourself informed.
