Delta Phi Epsilon holds a popular male beauty pageant every year. It is known as “Deepher Dude” and many flocked to the Campus Center atrium to support their friends on the stage, and to find out who would be crowned this year’s Dude.
The pageant was filled with many entertaining and intriguing feats that kept the audience captivated the entire time. The contestants participating were representatives of various clubs and organizations on campus. There were 9 contestants in total, which led to an incredibly enjoyable and fierce competition.
The first portion of the pageant was the intro. All 9 contestants were announced, one by one, and they had about a minute to make the best possible impression adhering to the jungle theme. The most notable introductions were given by Tyler from Tau Delta Phi and Chris from Psi Upsilon. Tyler took the jungle theme to another by dressing in a full gorilla costume and doing a realistic impersonation of the vicious animal; whereas the latter took a completely different approach. Chris walked out solemnly in a Toga baring his fraternity symbols painted onto his skin. He then paced the stage once, then returned to the center and removed his toga; showcasing his undergarments to a bewildered audience.
The next portion of Deepher Dude consisted of the talent show. The talents varied from stand-up comedy to singing to rapping and many other incredible talents. Tony from Nucleus brought to light the fact that most pop songs use the same four chords by singing along to his assistant, Malorie, on the piano. Arthur from Sigma Alpha Epsilon brought along the intriguing talent of being able to draw a good looking unicorn while blindfolded in under two minutes. Closing out the talent portion was Chris from Psi Upsilon with a segment of “tricks” with his dog. Hilariously, the dog ended up having trouble getting on stage; then he proceeded to roam around the room. As Chris approached to help the dog on stage, it started running around the atrium. The ensuing chaos incited hearty laughter from many Deephers, who appreciated the cuteness of the performance.
The third portion of the show focused on Deepher knowledge. Each contestant was asked three questions about DPhiE, and only a few of the contestants were able to answer the questions correctly.
After the questions, the pageant had officially ended and they segued into a date auction to keep the audience entertained and busy while the judges voted on the winners. The auction went fairly quickly and raised a good amount of money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Our very own Leonard from the Vector was auctioned off for a grand $100; making him the highest valued contestant.
Following the auction; the judges returned to the stage to conclude the night and announce the winners of the annual pageant. In third place came Leonard from Theta Chi and the Vector; the second place winner was Tyler from Psi Upsilon; and the winner of Delta Phi Epsilon’s Deepher Dude pageant was Kevin from Psi Upsilon!
Cystic Fibrosis
The purpose of the Deepher Dude pageant is to raise awareness and donations to assist victims of Cystic Fibrosis. According to Samantha Araujo, an active sister of DPhiE, aiding sufferers of this disease is something that their entire sorority is extremely passionate about.
Throughout the Fall semester DPhiE hosts many events, including Deepher Dude, to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was actually started by a Sister of DPhiE, which goes to show how important this cause is to them. Cystic Fibrosis itself is a disease that targets mainly the lungs. It makes it hard for victims to breathe and progressively gets worse until it becomes impossible to breathe. As of now, there is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis. The average life expectancy of someone diagnosed with this deadly disease is about 20-30 years; however, over the past few years, research and scientific breakthroughs have thrived in prolonging the life expectancy of people diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.
The foundation itself is not only trying to find a cure, but they are also working on finding ways to improve the lifestyle of those that currently have it. Be on the lookout for DPhiE bake sales and other small events and be sure to contribute towards helping the victims of Cystic Fibrosis! All proceeds go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
