Originally I planned to finish the Romantic movies recommendations this week with the continuation of the article. However, this endeavor was interrupted by my discovery of something much more important and much more entertaining: Danger 5, an Australian show new to Netflix that I will describe below.

The show inspired me so much I decided to dedicate an entire article to it and other works like it. Here is a show, a movie, and a short that will make people think you’re on drugs if you actually enjoy them.

Danger 5 (TV Show)

As I mentioned in the intro, Danger 5 is a trippy Australian serial. Set as an absurdist 60’s spy TV show, Danger 5 pulls out all the tropes of the bygone hippie TV era, including poorly made costumes, giant Claymation dinosaurs, and over the top acting that would make William Shatner tear up with pride.

Danger 5 is just an absolute pleasure to watch, if not just to see mutant dinosaur people fight an alcoholic Russian superspy.

Italian Spiderman (Movie)

Made by the same people who made Danger 5, Italian Spiderman is an absurd homage to the cheesy and poorly made superhero movies of the 60’s and 70’s and international movie versions of American comic book heroes. The short 40-minute movie is all in Italian, with English subtitles.

Like Danger 5, Italian Spiderman has the production value of an 80’s adult film and the acting of an overly dramatic middle school theater club. Still, its over the top style and ridiculous story make it hilarious to watch and it reminds us all to take life a little less seriously sometimes.

Too Many Cooks (Short)

I am always surprised when I meet someone who has not seen Too Many Cooks. The 11-minute short was a main conversation topic of every conscious reviewer on the Internet when it came out in November, and yet there are still many who have not seen it.

To be frank, Too Many Cooks isn’t the best thing you will see all day, and it isn’t the funniest either. But Adult Swim’s 90’s sitcom parody is a must see, if not for just how trippy and ridiculous it is. Too Many Cooks is like a Narwhal, or a Bread fish, in that you might not necessarily understand it, you might not see why it is beautiful or even enjoy its presence, but it is relevant regardless and you need to see it just because.
