Last year, NJIT Student Senate began a new and exciting tradition. Every semester, we turn to the student body for ideas to improve their experience on campus. This week, we begin the SAFRB (Student Activities Fund Review Board) proposal process.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, SAFRB is a budget set aside for one-time purchases or projects that will benefit the entire student body. Over the past twelve months, Senate has drafted and passed proposals worth over $75,000, including:
One Charging Locker for Cell Phones, Tablets, and Laptops $5,495.00
Twenty Cell Phone and Tablet Charging Stations $10,000.00
Ten Water Bottle Filling Stations with Drinking Fountain $22,500.00
Three Outdoor Wireless Access Points to improve connection
near Cypress Hall, the Lower Green, and Campus Center Plaza $11,000.00
Aerobic Dumbbells, Rack, and Yoga Mats for Warren Street Fitness Center $528.77
Adjustable Bench and Power Block Set for Warren Street Fitness Center $1537.00
2 Heavy Bags for Third Floor Fleisher Athletic Center $719.98
Mirrors for Warren Street Fitness Center $1,400.00
Submitting an idea for a SAFRB proposal gives you a chance to make a real and meaningful difference on campus. Every day, I get personal satisfaction from seeing students use the equipment for which I argued.
The last deadline for proposal submissions is Tuesday, September 27th. It is necessary to start this early because they must be reviewed by the Student Affairs committee before being voted on by the Student Senate. If approved by Senate, it will go up in front of the Student Activities Fund Review Board. Once the proposal is approved, the equipment will be subsequently purchased and installed if necessary.
The Student Senate will be holding Public Office Hours on September 19th and 27th in the Campus Center to obtain feedback on SAFRB Proposal ideas. There will be free food and drinks for those that participate!
If you are interested in contributing your input on proposals and other issues to improve NJIT, join the Student Affairs Committee! The committee works on improving GDS options and quality, campus safety and facilities, and much more. We meet at 4pm on Wednesdays in Campus Center 480 starting on Wednesday, September 21st. If you have a proposal or an idea for one, email me at [email protected] with your submission. Don’t forget to get it in by September 27th!
