Opening their doors on July 5, 2016, Ramen Gami is the latest food shop to open near NJIT. Situated on the corner of Sussex Ave and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, the shop offers delicious ramen and udon noodles with an assortment of toppings, as well as fresh sushi. The facade isn’t very impressive but when you walk inside, you see the elegant decor that lie within. From the sleek dark wooden floor, to the adorable wooden lamps hanging from the ceiling, the inside transports you to a warm and inviting environment that makes you forget the stress of college. The dining area has two chairs if you’re going with a friend, and high-tables along window panels facing the outdoors. On top of great indoor decor the plating is so cute, and comes ready to go in case you need to rush to class.
When asking one student if he’d ever been to Ramen Gami, he responded with a deep exhale “Oh yeah!” Despite opening so recently, the shop has gotten a lot of love from students. Some have even taken selfies with the ramen mummy painted on the wall. Another student had this to say. “As a person who generally doesn’t like noodles, I honestly found the food amazing. Like, the broth was great, and it looked just like it did in the pictures, which is rare. The pork bun tasted great, and felt soft like a cloud.”
I personally went in and ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen with Cha Sui Pork and I absolutely loved it. The pork was nice and tender, and the ramen was delicious. I especially liked the tonkotsu, as most ramen places I go to usually have either miso, spicy miso, or shoyu. Inspecting their menu, I noticed a lot of great options for their ramen. On top of meat, they had a lot of vegetarian options, like bean curd. I also tried the Sumo Roll, and it was absolutely amazing. It had everything you could ever want: crabmeat, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, avocado, and cream cheese! There were other great sushi rolls, like the Alaska, the Rainbow, or the Miami. The best part about the sushi is that it’s all fresh, and really well made.
Finally, the service was great, the employees were really nice, and were happy to recommend me some things to try. Overall I was really satisfied with everything here and I’m definitely visiting again, especially in the fall and winter when soup is just what I need.
