What does it take to form — or break — a habit? A common habit-forming tool amongst self-help communities revolves around the 21 Day Challenge. Many coaches and blogs utilize this formula. The concept is simple: commit to a task for 21 days straight if you want to cement a habit into your life, or to get rid of it altogether.
Although more recent studies have revealed this key number is more of a myth, we wanted to test the hypothesis. For 21 days, our staff committed to habits that we felt we wanted to try in order to improve our daily lives, and documented the journey along the way. Habits included yoga, jump roping, intermittent fasting, journaling, the Paleo diet, waking up at 5 AM and an unfortunate try with running.
We discuss the various motivations that allowed us to keep up with certain tasks, and what deterred us. We discuss the rewards of forming certain habits, and the possible drawbacks. If you’ve been attempting to form a new habit or to break an old one, keep reading to see how we fared.
